Honey Throughout History

Honey hailed as "all-purpose remedy" through the Ages.

By actual count, honey was the most-used medicament in ancient Egypt. Of the over 900 different remedies recorded, more than 500 were honey-based.

Hippocrates...the Father of Medicine wrote, "Honey drink cures phlegm and calms down cough"...prescribed 'oxymel' (vinegar and honey) for pain 'hydromel' (water and honey) for thirst and light fevers.

The preservative properties of honey are astounding. A royal Egyptian infant, well preserved in a container filled with honey, was discovered in one of the pyramids at Gizeh. In the first century A.D., the bodies of honored Jews were embalmed by placing them in honey for long periods.

Old Russian manuscript says, "Honey takes away the stench from wounds." Honey went to the wars right along with the warriors...wounds suffered in battle by everyone from the Crusader knights...to combatants of World War I were treated on the battlefield with wound dressings of honey.
